Dubbed the French Riviera and located in the extreme south-east of France, this region borders Italy to the east and contains the principality of Monaco which is in the Alpes Maritimes department. Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur is bounded to the north and east by the Alps, the Rhône river to the west and 150 miles of Mediterranean coastline to the south. Marseille is by far the largest city in Provence, and is the capital of the region. It is a popular area for the rich and famous, who come to sunbathe on the beaches in the summer and ski in the Alps in the winter. As a former Roman province, there are a huge number of Roman buildings and ruins to explore and the monuments in the town of Arles have resulted in the town being listed as a World Heritage Site. The climate in this region of France is typically Mediterranean, warm and dry with 300 sunny days every year. The Mistral - a strong, cold wind from the north blows through the region in the winter and spring.
