Languedoc-Roussillon
(including the departments of Aude, Gard, Hérault, Lozère and Pyrénées-Orientales)
Languedoc Roussillon is located in the south west of France, with a Mediterranean coastline and the Pyrenees mountains and Spain to the west. The region is heavily influenced by its Spanish neighbours - paella is a traditional dish and bullfighting can also be found here. Catalan, the language of much of Mediterranean Spain, is spoken here too. Languedoc Roussillon is famous for its vineyards and produces more wine than any other region in Europe.
The region was settled by the Romans, and there are many ancient buildings and ruins to be found. The coastal regions are cosmopolitan and affluent, whereas inland the region is rural with an older population. The region's administrative capital is Montpellier, a university town which boasts Nostradamus as one of its alumni. The climate along the coastline is Mediterranean, with mild winters and hot, dry summers. Towards Andorra the climate is influenced by the mountains - cooler in the summer with snow in the winter. The famous Mistral wind blows through this region and can bring rainfall with it.
