Franche-Comté
(including the departments of Jura and Saône-Haute)
Franche-Comte is in the east of France and shares a border with Switzerland.
The scenery is stunning - the Vosges mountains to the north, the Jura
range to the south, and in between lakes, gorges, vineyards and dense pine
forests. There are a number of ski resorts here which cater for the winter
visitor.
Unsurprisingly, there is a strong Swiss influence on the area not least in
the local produce - Comte cheese and delicious local sausage. Besançon is
the capital of the Franche-Comté
region. The Swiss influence is evident here too as the town is famous for
microtechnology, in particular the manufacture of watches.
The winters in this region can be very cold. The long summers are sunny and
warm.
